A workshop on Introduction of Plant virology and Plant virus diagnosis was held on Apr. 23rd 2013 in FAVRI with the representation of Dr. Stephan Winter and Dr. Marianne Koerbler, who belong to Plant Virus Dept., Leibniz-Institut DSMZ, Germany.

The DSMZ is one of the largest centers of biological resources. Currently, its collections comprise almost 40,000 items of bacteria, virus and fungal strains, plant cell lines, human and animal cell lines. All biological materials in DSMZ collection are subjected to quality control and physiological and molecular characterization. The DSMZ is also known as an international biological resource supplier for science, diagnostic laboratories, national reference center and industrial partners as well.
The trans-sectoral research of the DSMZ focuses on (1) microbial diversity and the underlying evolutionary mechanisms (genome evolution, population genetics), (2) improved methods for the access and ex situ preservation of biodiversity, as well as (3) molecular mechanisms of biological interactions (symbioses, mechanisms of disease, cancer).

In the workshop, Dr. Stephan Winter analyzed the importance of plant virology to agriculture at national level in particular and the world agricultural development in general, especially in the globalization context in which agricultural products can be introduced from all over the world. Fundamental research contributes to restriction of the development and spread of virus to importing countries, ensuring food safety and quality, as well as agricultural effectiveness.
Dr. Stephan Winter also affirmed that research on limiting plant virus diseases is not only to find virus-resistant genes, virus-tolerant traits but also to block the vectors of virus transmission on plants, such as thrips and aphids.
After the introduction of Plant virology, the presenter and workshop participants visited the experiment fields of fruits and vegetables in FAVRI to find the doubtful-diseased parts and practice diagnosing the plant virus diseases in the biotechnological laboratories in FAVRI.
