Discussion about workplan of project AGB/2012/059 by ACIAR
On 9 May 2013, Dr. Suzie Newman – New South Wales Dept. of Primary Industries (NWS DPT) and the management board of the project “Toward more profitable and sustainable vegetable farming systems in North-Western Vietnam and Australia (AGB/2012/059) worked and discussed with the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute about the project general workplan in the coming time. This project has been initiated following the recommendations of the final review of AGB/2006/112 which provide a strong case for a new phase of multi-disiplinary research.

The overall aim of the project is to improve the market engagement, profitability and sustainability of smallholder vegetable farmers in North Western Vietnam and Australia. The project will particularly focus on women and ethnic minorities engaged in horticultural value chains.
The project comprises of 5 components of which four components are implemented in Vietnam and one in Australia.
The project will deliver a comprehensive market analysis for indigenous and conventional vegatables enabling opportunities for smallholders to be readily identified. Value chain and postharvest interventions will be tested across four marketing models. Specific issues to be addressed by the projects include socioeconomic impact; crop production and agronomy (including yield); soil characteristics (physical and chemical); water (availability and quality); nutrient balance; and sustainability indicators for soil and nutrient. The achieved results are used to build up capacity in agribusiness research, development and extension including developing a sustainable model for up-scaling the Farmer Business School (FBS), and design initiatives to improve the food safety of vegetable and management of on-farm microbiological risks.

The project builds on partnerships of many organizations, institutions and agencies, which will be led by NSW DPI and Vietnam Women’s Uninon (VWU). Project partners are Soil and Fertilizer Research Institute (SFRI) and Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute (FAVRI), National Institute of Medicinal Materials (NIMM), Institute of Polict and Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Development (IPSARD), Hanoi University of Agriculture (HUA), Provincial Plant Protection Sub-Dept, University of Adelaide (UoA), University of Queensland (UoQ). The Australia program also partners with UoN and NSW Food Authority.
